A Weekend to Remember in Afambo Lake
Nestled in the northeastern edge of Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression, Afambo Lake stands as a serene and largely undiscovered natural treasure. During the University’s Community Service Week, held in celebration of World Tourism Day, I had the unique opportunity to explore this captivating site alongside second-year Tourism and Hotel Management students, as well as members of the university community.
What started as an academic field visit soon evolved into a transformative journey of discovery, cultural immersion, and reflection on Afambo Lake’s untapped tourism potential. While its serene beauty is captivating, the lake lacks essential visitor facilities and infrastructure. This article highlights its promise as an ideal weekend getaway while outlining key steps to unlock its full value.

What began as an academic field trip soon turned into a transformative journey—fostering a deep connection to the land, sparking discussions on responsible tourism, and enriching our understanding of the region’s natural and cultural wealth. This blog explores why Afambo Lake is more than just a destination—it’s a weekend sanctuary, a community treasure, and an untapped gem in Ethiopia’s tourism landscape.
An Unforgettable Experience in the Heart of Afar
Some journeys leave an unforgettable mark, and my recent visit to Afambo Lake in the Afar Region was one of them. As part of Samara University’s Community Service Week for Tourism Day, I led our eager second-year Tourism and Hotel Management students on a field trip that not only revealed the region’s stunning landscapes but also fueled our passion for responsible, experiential tourism.

More than an academic trip, this journey was an eye-opening experience that deepened our commitment to sustainable tourism in one of Ethiopia’s most overlooked destinations.

With this vision in mind, we set out on our journey to the stunning Afambo Lake.
Where Is Afambo Lake?
Afambo Lake, nestled in Afambo Woreda near the Ethiopian-Djibouti border, is part of a scenic lake chain fed by the Awash River. Amid semi-arid landscapes and volcanic hills, it brings life and beauty to the Danakil lowlands. Just 2.5 hours from Samara by car, it offers an accessible weekend escape for tourists, students, and researchers exploring the region.

This unique location has the potential to be a convenient weekend retreat for locals, travelers, researchers, and international visitors exploring the Afar region.
As the journey unfolds, the landscape transitions from rugged volcanic outcrops to pastoral villages, offering an authentic glimpse into Afar’s rich ecological and cultural tapestry.
A Natural Paradise in the Danakil Heat
Afambo Lake offers a refreshing contrast to Afar’s desert heat, with calm waters, lush greenery, and a rich variety of birdlife. In a region known for volcanic activity and salt flats, this hidden gem provides an unexpected retreat, where swaying palms and papyrus reeds frame a tranquil sanctuary for migratory birds.

- Birdwatcher’s Delight: Vibrant flamingos, pelicans, storks, and herons bring life to the tranquil waters.
- Lush Surroundings: Papyrus and aquatic grasses create a serene setting while offering nesting habitats.
- Refreshing Escape: Cool breezes off the lake provide relief from Afar’s intense heat.
- Scenic Beauty: The mirrored waters and volcanic hills make it a paradise for photographers.
Whether for tranquility or discovery, Afambo Lake offers both.
What We Experienced During the Visit
As part of University’s community service week, our field visit was both insightful and engaging. Students and staff explored the lake’s shores, connected with the local community, and discussed its tourism potential, realizing how largely untapped it remains.

Some of the key experiences included:
- Exploration & Ideas: Students trekked the lake’s shores, observing wildlife and brainstorming eco-tourism initiatives.
- Community Connections: Locals shared insights on fishing, livestock watering, and daily lake usage, deepening our understanding.
- Cultural Insights: Discussions on Afar water rituals and environmental beliefs highlighted their resilience and harmony with nature.
- Academic Dialogue: Open-air discussions explored community-based tourism, sustainable planning, and the challenges of overdevelopment.
This visit reinforced a key lesson: tourism is best understood through experience, not just study.
