While its serene beauty is captivating, the lake lacks essential visitor facilities and infrastructure. Some journeys leave an unforgettable mark, and my recent visit to Afambo Lake in the Afar Region was one of them. As part of Samara University’s Community Service Week for Tourism Day, I led our eager second-year Tourism and Hotel Management students on a field trip that not only revealed the region’s stunning landscapes but also fueled our passion for responsible, experiential tourism.
More than an academic trip, this journey was an eye-opening experience that deepened our commitment to sustainable tourism in one of Ethiopia’s most overlooked destinations.
With this vision in mind, we set out on our journey to the stunning Afambo Lake.

Afambo Lake, nestled in Afambo Woreda near the Ethiopian-Djibouti border, is part of a scenic lake chain fed by the Awash River. Amid semi-arid landscapes and volcanic hills, it brings life and beauty to the Danakil lowlands. Just 2.5 hours from Samara by car, it offers an accessible weekend escape for tourists, students, and researchers exploring the region.
This unique location has the potential to be a convenient weekend retreat for locals, travelers, researchers, and international visitors exploring the Afar region.
