Maheshwar: Memorable Journey to Holkar’s Capital

Maheshwar is a historical fort capital located on the bank of river Narmada in Khargone District of Madhya Pradesh. The town was restored to its pre eminent position in the 18th century by the revered Holkar queen, Rani Ahilyabai of Indore. She is credited with having commissioned many temples and fort complex, which still stands today. Now a days, Maheshwar attracts not only domestic tourists but international tourists and film makers of Bollywood & daily soap as well. Number of Bollywood movies was shot here and some more are in the pipeline. It’s a place where you can find river, fort, palaces, museum, temples etc and all these things are enough for a traveller like me to Explore.

Stunning Highways of NHAI

It was a cloudy morning and I was in Indore city with my friends when we planned for a day trip to Maheshwar. We hired a private vehicle from Indore and started our journey for Maheshwar at morning 7:00. Highways were beautiful and well maintained by NHAI.

We had a light breakfast on the way and  reached Maheshwar by 10:30 am.

After reaching there we took holy dip in the river Narmada and then started exploring the fort and palace.

From Royal Ghats of River Narmada we entered the fort. The palace inside the fort is now a museum that exhibits the treasures from the royal family.

Also inside the fort complex you can see and buy world famous Maheshwari sarees from the weaver’s society shop.

The important temples in Maheshwar town include the Kaleshwara, Rajarajeshwara, Vithaleshwara, and Akhileshwara.

Air: Nearest Airport is Indore (91 km) and connected with all major cities of India.
Rail: Nearest Railway Station is Indore (91) connecting with all major cities of India.
Road: Direct buses to all neighbour town and cities available from Khargone Bus Stand.

Where to Stay:
Best place to stay in Maheshwar is Narmada Retreat of Madhya Pradesh Toursim Board.

When to go:
Try to avoid in the month of April,  May and June.
