Kaho: The Easternmost Village of India

Dear readers, as the year drew to a close, I had the rare opportunity to visit Kaho the one celebrated as the easternmost village of India, where the horizon opens toward China’s territory. This remote hamlet carries the echoes of the 1962 Sino-India War, a chapter of courage and sacrifice etched into its soil. Standing here, one feels a powerful blend of patriotism, spirituality, natural beauty, and the rhythm of village life. Nestled in Lohit Valley of Anjaw district, Arunachal Pradesh—Northeast India’s “Land of the Rising Sun”—Kaho is not just a destination; rather, it becomes an experience that stirs both heart and soul.

Kahu, near Kibithoo on the Lohit River, sits at India’s edge with China. These frontier villages, once battlefields in the Sino-Indian War, now echo with history. The Lohit flows in from China—called Zayu there—before joining as the mighty Brahmaputra. Both the villages are home of Mishmi tribes.

The journey from Tilam to Kaho begins with crossing the Lohit River on an army-built bridge, then continues along winding mountain roads with thrilling turns. Meanwhile, battle sites of the Sino-Indian War reveal artifacts of courage, and as the river rushes below and army outposts watch above, you finally reach Kaho—a serene border village, now a lasting symbol of peace.
