Alampur: A Forgotten Holkar’s Legacy

Even after nearly 250 years, the Holkar-era heritage chhatris of Alampur still await recognition. Culturally rooted in Bundelkhand and politically placed in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh, Alampur is a medieval town. Interestingly, it earned its name during the Mughal Era when a Hindu chieftain was honored with the title of Alam Shah. However, due to limited awareness and continued neglect by the Archaeological Department, tourists remain unable to access this historic site.

This intricately crafted chhatri stands gracefully on the riverbank, to the right of the road leading from Alampur to Daboh. Its square sanctum is encircled by a pillared circumambulatory path, reflecting the architectural elegance of the Maratha era. Built in red sandstone, the structure features finely carved arches and miniature domes nestled between the pillars, showcasing exceptional stone artistry. The northern section bears wall markings and striking brickwork figures behind the chhatri. Above, the shikhar displays a harmonious blend of dome, amalaka, and kalash motifs—captivating every visitor with its sculptural finesse.
